How To Save Money On Groceries - Food For Less

Here are some great tips on how to save money on groceries. These are helpful for cooking for a large family or a large household.

  • Buy generic or "store" brands instead of brand names. These make great frugal foods !  Commodity items like flour and sugar are often identical regardless of the brand label.  Generic sauces and mixes can sometimes be lower in quality so you may wish to try small amounts before stocking up.  This  potentially saves a household of 7 about  $20 per week!

  • Use coupons to reduce your grocery bill!  You can save anywhere from $5 to $15 per week or more!

  • Buy in bulk if practical.  You can potentially save from $10 to $20 per week buying in bulk.

  • Carry a calculator with you or at least start to memorize the approximate unit costs.  This way when you see an item on sale and you know the approximate unit cost (cost per pound) is normally much more, you will stock up on this item.

  • Stock up on sale items and freeze them if possible.  You can potentially save about $10 per week or more doing this.

  • Want better tasting orange juice at a lower cost? Mix frozen orange juice half-and-half with inexpensive frozen apple juice - you will get sweeter juice (that tastes like the pricey stuff!) with all the vitamin C of regular orange juice.

  • Stay away from highly processed foods in expensive packaging if possible. Conversely, commodity items like white or brown rice which may be purchased in bulk for pennies on the pound really provide a lot of food value for the amount spent.

  • Make special coupon-only shopping trips.  Get every possible coupon item that you can (and will) use. Canned goods are the best.  Frozen and dry keep well for 6 months to a year.  You can save as much as $30 in a trip!

  • Bring your own lunch to work and make your own coffee - this can easily save up to $20 per week.  Here, spending more on groceries will save you a lot!
