According to a recent amendment of the Fair Credit Reporting Act, added in 2005, you have the right to get a free copy of your credit report once every 12 months, from each of the nationwide consumer credit reporting companies - Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion.

What about all the offers for "Free Credit Reports" that I see ads for?
Many so-called "Free Credit Reports" involve signing up for a "Free" trial service. After the free period ends, you are then automatically enrolled in a program that bills your credit card monthly - that's not free if you ask me! In some cases it may even be difficult to cancel the service. The only way to get a truly free credit report is to request the free credit report as set up by the Federal Government. Also, for information about credit scams, go to the Federal Trade Commission Site for information - they are unbiased and are not out to sell you something!
